1) Start slow.
Go easy when you first start out with any exercises including cardio and weights. Try not to be one of those guys that think they can just pick up where they left off with the heavy weights or start running 6 or more miles after they took a year or more off. What you want to do is start slow the first week. Meaning, just do only two sets with 10 to 12 reps with light weights. After two weeks, gradually increase the amount of sets and weights only after you have been consistent for two weeks.
2) Get help.
Hire an experienced personal trainer. Most people are afraid to workout because they don't know how to get started or will get hurt and injured. So they try to do it on their own with little or no results. Then a lot of people quit and give up. If you want to get started right from the start and want to maximize your time in the gym, then it's easier to hire a trainer or a coach to get you there quicker. Your trainer or coach will keep you on track, teaching you the correct exercises, form, stretches, breathing techniques and will help motivate you along the way. Which helps keep you accountable making sure you do all the right things to keep you progressing faster and most importantly keep you from plateauing and not seeing results.
That's it, it's not rocket science but it works! Start slow and get help so you can see results faster and avoid injuries. It's much easier to be accountable to someone else that is helping you get to your fitness goals. Most people will do their exercises when they know they have an appointment set up or else they get charged for not showing up.
